The Gossamer Mice and Halo Fish seem to be the first mention of 'canary' like animals in the sick bay that seemed to be such a large part of Phlox's lab in ENT. I love seeing little connections like this that may be coincidental but make me think that at the end of the day, the writers throughout Star Trek really were fans and Trekkers themselves. Just like seeing the interactions between Young Spock/Classmates/Sarek in Yesteryear earlier this season seem to be translated almost directly (at least in spirit) to the 2009 movie. It's something greater than continuity... I don't know what word describes it better.
